POSTPONED – Abingdon International Fireworks Festival
St Helen Without Parish Council has been formally advised that the Abingdon International Fireworks Festival, which was due to take place at Dalton Barracks on Saturday 29 August 2026, has been postponed and will not take place this summer
Published: 17 August 2026

The decision follows the exceptionally dry weather experienced over recent weeks, which has resulted in a significantly increased risk of wildfire across the local area.
The event organiser, Xplosive Events, and the Ministry of Defence have continued to review conditions, proposed safety measures and the potential risks associated with the use of fireworks and pyrotechnics at Dalton Barracks.
Despite extensive mitigation measures being considered, it was ultimately concluded that the remaining risk of a fire spreading beyond the immediate event area could not be reduced to an acceptable level. The Ministry of Defence therefore advised that the event could not proceed in its planned format.
The organiser subsequently confirmed that postponement was the preferred option rather than proceeding without fireworks, pyrotechnics or other fire-related activities.
The Parish Council is aware that there has been considerable local interest in the event and, more recently, understandable concern about the potential fire risk given the prolonged dry conditions.
We welcome the careful consideration that has been given to the safety of the surrounding community, the Defence estate and the wider environment. We also recognise the considerable work undertaken by Xplosive Events, the Ministry of Defence, Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service and other stakeholders in exploring whether the event could be delivered safely.
The Abingdon International Fireworks Festival will therefore not take place at Dalton Barracks on 29 August 2026.
We will provide any further information regarding a future date for the event when this is formally confirmed.
